Distressing Wood with Candle Wax…

I love the look of distressed wood.  And have found out through trial and error how you can easily get this effect with a candle.  Here’s how I distressed the following wooden dish.

  1. Since this had a varnish on it I lightly sanded it with 220 grit sandpaper.  After wards I cleaned it with a tack cloth.
  2. I then took my candle, any type of candle will work, and rubbed it on the areas I wanted the wood to show through.  I rubbed enough on it until the areas had a good layer of wax on them.  I then rubbed off the excess wax with a cloth.
  3. Being that this was a small project I spray painted it.  I chose an off-white spray paint.  You know, the Wal-Mart cheapie stuff for .99.
  4. I sprayed the entire dish, waited for it to dry and then took my sandpaper (or you cold use medium-grade steel wool) and rubbed the areas that held the wax to let the wood show through.
  5. You could then use polyurethane to protect the wood, but I chose not to with this piece since it won’t get a lot of wear.

I really like the final look of the dish.  I think this technique will look great on the over-sized mirror I bought at Goodwill.  If you have tried this technique or have an even better one, let me know!
