Painting over laminate isn’t difficult as long as you follow a few key steps. Remember my post about prepping before starting a piece. Follow those steps before you start painting.
Once that part is complete you can begin the fun part…Painting! I didn’t use a separate primer. Instead I used an all-in-one from Valspar.
After the first coat I lightly sanded the piece with fine sandpaper to get rid of any drips and imperfections. Then I rolled on the second coat.
To paint inside the cabinet I cut in the sides with my paint brush to make it easier to roll the paint on to cover the rest of the shelves. This made fast work of painting inside the cabinet.
The Ooops paint I used inside the cabinet was Olympic latex semi-gloss. Since it was Ooops paint I have no idea of the name of the color and all I had as a reference to the color was the dab of paint on the lid. But whatever the name…it’s a very soothing green and I love it!
Most people get intimidated when it comes to painting but my advice would be to start with small cheap pieces and buy Ooops paint so if you do mess up you won’t have a lot invested. But don’t give up, practice makes perfect.
Stay tuned for the big reveal of my painted laminate cabinet.
