I so love Thanksgiving ; having family all under one roof warms my soul. And I especially love cooking for Thanksgiving and each year there are a few recipes I have to cook or my family will disown me. My father passed away 20 years ago but I can still remember the dishes he would prepare for Thanksgiving and the love and time he would put into each one. The following recipes are ones I have made for many years and each time I prepare them it takes me back to when my father would be in the kitchen preparing Thanksgiving dinner with my mom. Don’t you love how certain smells and foods take you back to when you were a child. Even though my father isn’t here I still have these wonderful memories that will stay with me for a lifetime…
This first dish is one I make all through the year but is definitely one I have to serve at Thanksgiving. I have been making sweet potato casserole for at least 15 years now and it tastes more like dessert than it does a side dish.
My next favorite Thanksgiving recipe is a Southern Sausage Dressing that has been served in my family for at least 30+ years. Although I gave up eating meat a few years ago I still make this every Thanksgiving for my family. It’s very simple yet oh so good. I add a little orange zest to give this dish an extra depth of flavor.
And last but certainly not least is dessert but not any dessert; it has to be Paula Deen’s Pumpkin Gooey Butter Cake for my family. This decadent flavorful cake is just wonderful and it is another dish that I serve all through out the year. Don’t be worried if it still has a little jiggle to it when you pull it out of the oven. After it cools down it will set up perfectly. I love to serve this with some whipped topping and grated nutmeg. Simply delicious with a cup of coffee at the end of a great meal.
These are just a few of my favorite Thanksgiving recipes…what are some of yours?
